HALL OF FAME - HORSE OF THE YEAR

Tasmanian racing enjoyed its biggest night of the year with the Hall of Fame and Horse of the Year presentation evening at Elwick racecourse on Friday, August 20.

The gala function was attended by over 300 people and there were emotional scenes when five new members were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Premiership jockey Brendon McCoull was recognised for winning his 11th riding title by being inducted along with Walter McShane (trainer), associates Max Harris and Jim Osborne and Sunny Lane (racehorse).

Retired Hall of Fame trainer Len Dixon has joined former champion jockey as the second racing legend to be recognised.

Tasmanian Newmarket and George Adams Plate winner Life To The Full won the Racehorse of the Year award, Tasmanian Derby winner Gee Gees Blackflash took out the three-year-old award and Spreyton trained Strike The Tiger was judged the leading two-year-old.

MOWBRAY THURSDAY RACING - CHANGE TO SUNDAY

The Tasmanian Turf Club has been forced to give up its plans to run regular Thursday afternoon race meetings.

It has been advised by Tasracing that future meetings planned for Thursday have been transferred to Sunday afternoons until the resumption of night racing in the new season.

A fall in betting turnover and the lack of interstate support from media outlets was understood to be behind the decision to revert to Sundays.

The drop in betting has been attributed to the switch of racing coverage to the new Sky Channel 2 program.

The Melbourne Herald-Sun and the Winning Post have also dropped the publication of fields and form guides for the Mowbray meetings.

The decision to switch back to Sundays has halted the TTC's plans to have Thursday racing beamed into Singapore and other South-East Asian markets.

Sunday racing will resume at Mowbray on August 1.

TROA SECRETARY - PROVOCATIVE THOUGHTS

TROA's State council secretary Keith Butterworth has come out with some provocative thoughts on the direction of racing in Tasmania.

In his sights are the State Government and the key racing bodies Tote and Tasracing.

He claims the State Government merely pays lip service to racing without fully appreciating its worth to employment and the rural economy.

LAUNCESTON CUP 2010 - LARRY'S NEVER LATE

Larry's Never Late overcame some pre-race drama to snatch the $300,000 Launceston Cup at Mowbray on February 24.

The race was robbed of one of the major chances when Hobart Cup runner-up Fine De Lago failed a veterinary test less than an hour before race start.

Larry's Never Late, trained at Mt Eliza (Vic) by Rodney "Rocket" Douglas was given the run of the race by jockey Ben Melham to beat Dream Pedlar and top weight Growl.

The win capped a big Launceston Cup carnival for Douglas and Melham.

Douglas also took the $150,000 Tasmanian Oaks with Coulis and Melham won the $100,000 Vamos Stakes with I'm A Hussy.

Douglas said the Launceston Cup was a rewarded for the under-rated Larry's Never Late.

``He ran in three derbies last season, finishing third in Queensland where he was just beaten for second by Shocking,'' he said.

HOBART CUP 2010 - GROWL

Hong Kong-owned Growl broke a 3 1/2 year winning-drought when he raced away with the $400,000 Hobart Cup on February 8.
Trained at Flemington by David Hayes the seven-year-old proved far superior to his opposition when he scored by over four lengths from fellow Victorian De Fine Lago with Tasmanian hope Dream Pedlar making up good ground to fill third.
A reason Growl had been out of the winner's circle for so long was mainly due to the gelding making regular visits to Hong Kong where he failed to handle the local racing conditions.

Growl was ridden by Victorian jockey Brad Rawiller who has now completed the Launceston and Hobart Cup double, winning at Mowbray previously on Hoffmeister.

DEVONPORT CUP 2010 - WITH DECORUM

Emotions ran high at Spreyton Park when With Decorum scored a decisive win in the Devonport Cup on January 6.
The win provided Longford trainer John Blacker with his first major success since losing his wife Maree in the Samoa Tsunami in September.
The win also carried special significance for the mare's breeder Robyn Whishaw, jockey Craig Newitt and 91-year-old part-owner Jim Osborne. For the full story click here

TROA LIFE MEMBER'S - OVERDUE SUCCESS
TROA life member Graeme Dean made an overdue visit to the winner's circle when first starter Silver Strike saluted at Elwick on January 31.
Dean has raced horses for over 30 years and has been responsible for forming several syndicates around the Devonport area.
Dean bought into Silver Strike after another horse he raced with Devonport breeder Vu Tu died from a twisted bowel earlier this year.
Silver Strike is a full sister to Flemington winner Silver Bullion and appears to have a bright future ahead.
The filly is trained at Spreyton by Michael Trinder and leading jockey Brendon McCoull took the ride at Elwick.
The win was a fillip for Mr Dean who was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness late last year.
He was an inaugural member of TROA's North-West division and has worked tirelessly for the organisation for many years.

  TROA STATE COUNCIL - CHANGES
The State council of TROA could undertake a restructure following decisions made at the annual meeting in November.
The meeting decided that the council would move from the regional representation of Southern, Northern and North-West delegates to a single State body to service the interest of owners.

As per the motion at the TROA Annual General Meeting held 30 September 2009 at Ross the Constitution will be changed in order for the body to become a statewide body rather than 3 separate divisions. Each member of the Council has studied the Constitution and suggested some relevant changes needed and discussed at the meeting on January 13
Detailed below are the contents of a letter from TROA president Alison Archer to all members.

``As a result of these proposed changes to organisational structure, meetings will be held on a statewide basis rather than in individual areas, and membership and structure of the Council will not be determined by region but rather by willingness or  need to have appropriate statewide representation.

A draft constitution has been  proposed by the TROA Council and will be finalised at a meeting at Ross on March 10th 2010 before a special meeting to be convened in accordance with the current constitution with proper notice of alterations etc, having been given to all members or at an adjourned meeting called for the purpose of the alteration to be held at Ross May 2010.

All financial members of TROA are entitled to an electronic copy of the Constitution and any by laws as well as any amendments.

I hope these changes are seen by all members as a means of providing a strong and united organisation which can provide a unanimous and credible voice on behalf of all owners".

It is anticipated that a new Constitution will be available for members to sign off within a few weeks. Elections will then conducted to put the new Committee in place.
This followed a decision to change the Association's Constitution so that all Tasmanian owners automatically become members of TROA.
With TROA now representing all Tasmanian owners, it paved the way to enable the Association to forward a submission to the Tasmanian Racing Board for the introduction of an "OWNERS CARD" similar to those cards currently available to owners in other States.

DEVONPORT - RACING SYNDICATION
The Devonport Racing Club has launched a novel syndication scheme it hopes will promote racing on the North-West.
The club wants to have up to three racehorses available to be raced by a syndicate of interested members.
The club has already been active at the Tasmanian Select Magic Million Yearling sales and is now courting members who may want to participate.
Depending on the number of syndicate members there is expected to be an initial outlay of $500 each and then a payment of $20 per week.
It is intended for the racehorses to be trained at Spreyton Park and the club will register its own racing silks. A breakfast will be held at the racecourse at 8.30am on Saturday, June 13 when interested members can inspect the two horses acquired so far.Further information can be obtained from the Devonport Racing Club office.

  DENISE MARTIN - STAR THOROUGHBREDS
The run of success continues for Denise Martin and Star Thoroughbreds with Theseo now flying the flag after the retirement of Golden Slipper winner Sebring.
Denise is a former Tasmanian schoolteacher who turned to the business of syndicating racehorses in 1995.

Sebring, the champion two-year-old of his year, has been retired and will stand stud duties at Widden Stud in 2009.
Sebring cost $143,000 and became a millionaire on the racetrack winning $2.53m for his 10 owners.
He faces a bright future at Widden and his stud fee will be announced in April.
Over the past 12 years Martin has introduced more than 300 individual owners to racing and her horses have won in excess of 500 races and are trained for her by Gai Waterhouse.
